Spotify has acknowledged that its music streaming app may be causing significant battery drain and overheating on iPhones running OS 15, following a series of complaints received from users.
The company said in a statement that it has communicated the issue to its iOS technical team for further investigation. However, we presume Spotify could provide such a fix through a firmware update or troubleshooting steps. In the meantime, users experiencing similar issues are asked to click the "+Vote" and "Subscribe" buttons to be notified of any developments.
The newly released iOS 15 features many significant upgrades, including new notification formats and Live Text. For many users, however, such upgrades come at a price. Many report that the new software update has apparently disrupted paired devices such as the Apple Watch and AirPods.
iOS 15 also appears to have affected third-party applications, one of which is Spotify. This music streaming service is said to drain nearly 30% of the iPhone battery per hour. That means that running this app for about three hours could leave the iPhone without power; Spotify also acknowledged that some users may also be experiencing overheating issues, although there is no estimate on the exact temperature provided.
"I have to delete Spotify because my iPhone 11 feels dangerously hot, either melting or exploding," one user shared in a Spotify thread.
From the comments below the thread, we can see that many users are currently considering cancelling their premium subscriptions and even considering the possibility of moving to Spotify's rival app, Apple Music. One user compared battery drain rates and said My phone uses 30-40% of its battery every hour I use Spotify. The Apple Podcast app works fine. 3% drain per hour."
We have not done any benchmarking ourselves, so we cannot confirm if the above numbers are indeed accurate. Regardless, it seems clear that the battery drain is quite excessive.
In a support comment, Spotify Moderator suggests that users perform a "clean reinstall" and see if the problem persists.
To do so, one must open Spotify and access the app's settings. From there, tap on "Storage" and select "Delete Cache". Then open iPhone Settings, tap General, select iPhone Storage, and select Spotify. From there, you can tap "Remove App" to offload the app; after restarting the iPhone, reinstall Spotify.
If you haven't already installed iOS 15, see our iOS 15 page.
