WhatsApp can now transfer chat history between iPhone and Android - here's how

Switching between iPhone and Android has always been a hassle, but a new WhatsApp feature will make it easier.

According to WhatsApp, both iOS and Android users will be able to move all of their chat history, voice memos, and photos between devices. The announcement was made as part of Samsung's Galaxy Unpacked event, where the company unveiled the new Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3.

During the presentation, this feature was demonstrated using Samsung's Smart Switch app. This app helps transfer contacts, photos, music messages, notes, and more between iPhones and other Android devices and Samsung devices.

While it may be limited to Samsung devices for now, the WhatsApp transfer feature will not remain the same. In a separate announcement, Whatsapp said that both Android and iOS users will be able to take advantage of this feature, meaning Android users will be able to use it when switching to an Apple device. According to Whatsapp, the feature will first be available for Android.

At least on Samsung devices, it looks like it will be easy to use this feature. Users will need to connect their phones with a USB Type-C to Type-C or Lightning cable, launch the Smart switch app, and scan the QR code on the old device. To complete the import, the user must sign in to WhatsApp on the new device.

Since WhatsApp messages are encrypted and stored on the device, developers needed to create a tool to move chat history along with additional support from Google, Apple, and device manufacturers.

"Your WhatsApp messages are yours. They are not accessible from the cloud like many other messaging services."

"For the first time, WhatsApp history can be securely transferred between operating systems. This has been one of the most requested features by users for years, and we worked with OS and device manufacturers to resolve this issue.
