Release date, price, specifications and features of OnePlus Buds Pro

OnePlus has officially announced the OnePlus Buds Pro. The wireless earbuds were sort of leaked as part of a testing program. As previously reported, the Buds Pro is a significant evolution from the original OnePlus Buds, with support for active noise cancellation (ANC) and Warp Charge. [Announced at the same time as the OnePlus Nord 2, the OnePlus Buds Pro will arrive this year at a price point that will surpass that of the AirPods Pro. We will be preparing a review in August to see if the Buds Pro is worthy of joining the ranks of the best wireless earbuds, but until then, here are all the details on the just announced.

The OnePlus Buds Pro will retail for $149. This is much higher than the $79 launch price of the OnePlus Buds, but this is a much more advanced set of earphones, not to mention a much more luxurious looking one.

Besides, $149 is not that expensive by ANC earphone standards. This is the same price as the recent Beats Studio Buds, whose affordability was a pleasant surprise.

The BudsPro is available directly from OnePlus, but we expect it to follow the OnePlus Buds and be available from a wider range of third-party retailers.

The OnePlus Buds Pro will be available in the U.S. and Canada on September 1, so OnePlus may be able to bring it to market sooner than the AirPods 3.

This obviously leaves a gap of several weeks between announcement and launch. If you are not an immediate buyer, you may want to wait for this opportunity to see if the Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 will indeed be announced at the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event on August 11. It is also rumored to be a sub-$200 noise-canceling headphone, which could put the two in direct competition before the AirPods 3 is rumored to launch in September.

In our eyes, one of the biggest improvements the Buds Pro makes over the OnePlus Buds is the overall design. Gone is the long stem and almost horn-like profile of the driver casing, giving the Buds Pro a more compact and modern appearance. The stem is still present, but much shorter and blends more smoothly into the rest of the bodywork.

Unlike the OnePlus Buds, the OnePlus Buds Pro design also features interchangeable ear tips. These ear tips fit snugly in the ear and help create a better seal. This allows ambient sound to be blocked out more, allowing ANC to function more effectively.

The earphones also now have a two-tone aesthetic, with the top half covered in matte plastic and shiny metal plating wrapped around the stem. This metal portion also functions as a touch sensor for playback control.

The charging case has also been redesigned: instead of the AirPods-style upright case, the OnePlus Buds Pro's container has a flattened earphone. As a result, the case is flatter, and another upgrade is support for wireless charging with Qi certified pads and mats.

The OnePlus Buds Pro's fine specs include 11mm dynamic drivers, Bluetooth 5.2 connectivity, and up to 38 hours of battery life. However, this is with ANC turned off, and with noise cancellation, up to 28 hours in both cases with repeated use of the charging case.

ANC itself is adaptive and can increase or decrease the amount of ambient sound cut off depending on how noisy the surroundings are. For example, if you are alone in an office, ANC is lightly effective, while on a busy street it works more powerfully to silence additional distractions.

OnePlus also promises superior sound with the OnePlus Audio ID profile. This adjusts driver output according to the "sonic sensitivity" of the individual listener. Since everyone perceives frequencies slightly differently, Buds Pro may help maintain a balanced sound.

Returning to batteries, another addition is support for Warp Charge. Warp Charge is OnePlus' fast charging technology, which has become a regular feature on the company's smartphones since it was first introduced on the OnePlus 7T. Warp Charge is said to be able to provide 10 hours of playback on a charging case with just 10 minutes of charging, which by wireless earphone standards This is fantastic by the standards of wireless earbuds.

For Warp Charge to work, it requires a wired connection as opposed to wireless charging. However, unlike its implementation in OnePlus smartphones, there is no need for a specific Warp Charge-branded power adapter or USB-C cable for use with the OnePlus Buds Pro case.
