With the graphics card shortage showing no signs of abating, the news of a new GPU from AMD is cause for rejoicing and evidence that the Radeon RX 6600 XT is not far behind.
But if you've been waiting for its arrival to get decent PC gaming performance without paying skyrocketing duff prices, you might want to reconsider if the claims of two leakers are correct: YouTubers Coreteks and Moore's Law is Dead each independently predicted a launch price of $399, which is considerably higher than the $300-$370 figure many had expected.
Considering that $399 is only $80 less than the asking price of the Radeon RX 6700 XT (although it is somewhat less likely that duffers will pay it soon), and that we expect similar performance to the $330 Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 so this alleged pricing may be quite optimistic.
Still, when Tom from Moore's Law is Dead asked the live stream audience how much they expected the card to cost before his big reveal, another known AMD leaker, Kepler, live commented on the same $399 figure. He popped up. Said Tom, "I wouldn't be surprised if he knew something."
Nevertheless, Tom stressed that the numbers he heard could change. He continued, "I really feel like AMD is just testing the waters, and I know it's not final." So what I would recommend is that people make it clear online that they would be angry if it was $399."
Coreteks, on the other hand, clarified that the $399 figure is merely an informed guess. He said, "If I had to guess, I would say that the MSRP for the 6600XT would be $399. This is my guess, but I think it's about right. Prices are not set until just before launch, so even if I could confirm the price, it could change," he said. He added, however, that he expects an August launch.
With GPU prices generally skyrocketing, it is possible that AMD will achieve high sales at a higher-than-expected MSRP.
Whether you decide to buy is, of course, a matter for you and your bank account. To help you make your decision, however, the rumor so far seems to be a card with 2,048 stream processors, 8GB of GDDR6 VRAM, and a speed boost of up to 2,674MHz. This can be expected to roughly compete with the GeForce RTX 3060 and Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti.
