The best place to play "Battlefield 2042" may not be on a PS5 or Xbox Series X, but on one of our best gaming PCs or best gaming laptops.
That's because EA and developer Dice have partnered with Nvidia to bring Deep Learning Supersampling (DLSS) and latency-reducing Reflex technology to their upcoming military multiplayer shooter.
From what we've seen of Battlefield 2042 so far, it looks pretty good, but the game video trailer didn't reveal at all what platforms the game is running on: Xbox at E3 2021 and Bethesda Games' We were able to see quite a bit of the game at the showcase, so we could assume that it was running on the Xbox Series X. However, many of these games are also optimized for PC, so Battlefield 2042 could be running on a high-end PC.
In any case, those who want the best Battlefield 2042 experience would likely be better off playing the game on a PC with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 20 or 30 series graphics card. This is because these cards are equipped with machine learning technology that supports DLSS.
DLSS is an AI-powered protocol that renders images at lower resolutions and then uses smart up-mixing to display these images at much higher resolutions. Thus, DLSS can provide pseudo-4K games with high frame rates without forcing the GPU to render the game at native 4K resolution.
Nvidia Reflex, on the other hand, is a toolkit that can measure system latency and optimize games so that the PC and display respond faster to the player's mouse and keyboard inputs. This may be what competitive gamers are looking for; unlike DLSS, Reflex is compatible with Nvidia GeForce cards up to the GTX 900 series.
In short, the best version of Battlefield 2042, which will be released on October 22, could be on PC. Of course, finding a place to buy an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 or other new Nvidia GPUs is still very difficult at this point. This may improve as the year progresses, but don't hold your breath.
