Sony's Master Series A90J OLED TV is the best OLED TV Sony will offer this year, but it doesn't come cheap. The new TVs go on sale today, with prices starting at $2,999.
Available in 55-, 65-, and 83-inch sizes, the Sony Master Series A90J OLED TV is the best 4K Smart TV in the Sony 2021 TV lineup and features a brilliant OLED panel and Sony's impressive XR Cognitive processor, combined with the latest Google TV smart software. However, Sony is not known for its affordable pricing, and the A90J is priced like a premium smart TV.
Sony's best 4K TVs may have a lot going for them, but they are not cheap; the 55-inch model starts today for $2,999 and the 65-inch model sells for $3,999, making them among the more expensive on the market.
A larger 83-inch model will be available in May, but Sony has not yet announced pricing. Dealer B&H Photo lists the XR83A90J and notes that pre-orders will begin on May 17.
Sony has a reputation for producing some of the best OLED TVs on the market, often offering better picture quality and sound than the leading LG OLED TVs, despite Sony's use of LG panels. Sony achieves this in a variety of ways, but much of the difference in picture quality can be attributed to Sony's video processing.
The A90J is advertised as providing the brightest OLED image in Sony's history, offering excellent HDR performance by fine-tuning contrast, as well as handling black levels very well OLED displays can turn subtle shades of black and gray into indistinguishable black blobs They can turn them into blacks and grays, losing distinction and detail where it is most needed.
Sony counters this with XR OLED Contrast Pro, which combines video processing and physical technology. The screen itself is made of aluminum laminate, which improves thermal management and reduces hot spots that can cause OLED displays to not appear the brightest.
Sound should also be top-notch, and the A90J boasts Sony's impressive Acoustic Surface Audio+. Compared to traditional TV sound, which places speakers around or behind the display, this technology pairs sound with on-screen objects and actors to provide a more immersive viewing and listening experience
.
Even setting aside the OLED display and advanced audio technology, Sony's 2021 TV has much to offer: the A90J OLED has four HDMI ports, two of which support the HDMI 2.1 standard for connection.
On the software side, Sony's entire smart TV lineup has switched from Android TV to Google TV.
Finally, Sony TVs offer a unique streaming service called Bravia Core. It is a mix of unlimited streaming and free credits that can be cashed in to watch premium 4K movies. Sony promises a large library of content, including a large collection of Sony movies and IMAX Enhanced titles, but also claims lossless 4K quality, with streaming movies offering Blu-ray quality that beats Netflix and other streaming services.
