The Ghost of Tsushima movie will be released! It was just announced by Sucker Punch Studios, a subsidiary of Sony Interactive Entertainment, and we're already dying to see it.
Sucker Punch game director Nate Fox broke the news in a PlayStation Blog post, revealing that the story of Jin Sakai's revenge will be told again on the big screen. Fox said, "We've all been in tears in a movie theater surrounded by strangers," citing "E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial."
In his announcement, Fox also explains the economic rationale for this adaptation: The Ghosts of Tsushima sold over 6.5 million copies.
Of course, the film Ghost of Tsushima must clear a high hurdle in terms of cinematic beauty. The game itself is as cinematic and gorgeous as the video game itself. Like the black-and-white Snyder cut, "Ghost of Tsushima" also offers a different look in Kurosawa mode, with the colors turned off.
Fox did not explain when the film is scheduled to be released, but since it usually takes less than two and a half years to produce a major motion picture, we can expect to see the "Ghost of Tsushima" film in the fall or winter of 2023.
No word yet on who will be in the movie, but expect angry tweets if Daisuke Tsuji, the voice actor for Jin Sakai, is left out. Look at the Internet. Tweets are already demanding it.
While we are excited to see Tsushima on the big screen, the coolest news about the announcement is that Jin Sakai's story is in the hands of the right people. Chad Stahelski, the master of the John Wick series, will direct Ghost of Tsushima.
And while the John Wick films are known for their "gun-fu," Stahelski believes he will do swordplay exactly right. This is because Stahelski describes gun-fu as a style that mixes "Japanese jujitsu, Brazilian jujitsu, tactical 3-gun, and standing judo."
And for a faithful adaptation, he would seek the input of the necessary experts, including the game production team. The "John Wick" film is a great example of the attention to detail in the choreography of combat. Watch Stahelski explain how to shoot a gun in this clip about "John Wick 2.
