It's Xiaomi's week. Shortly after unveiling the eye-catching Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra phone and AirPower-style wireless charging mat, the Chinese company unveiled its first foldable, the Mi Mix Fold. This foldable closely resembles the Galaxy Z Fold 2, which includes a foldable display.
However, there are important differences between the Mi Mix Fold and the Galaxy Z Fold. While Xiaomi is limiting sales of this new foldable to China, the Mi Mix Fold starts at 9,999 yuan (roughly US$1,521). This means that the Mi Mix Fold is theoretically about $500 cheaper than the Galaxy Z Fold 2.
The 8.01-inch full OLED display has a resolution of 2,480 x 1,860 and a refresh rate of 60 Hz; when folded, the Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold is 6.52 inches wide. 52-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2,520 x 840 and a refresh rate of 90 Hz.
Inside is a Snapdragon 888 and a massive dual-cell 5,020 mAh battery; the Mi Mix Fold supports 67W charging and can fully charge the battery in 37 minutes. It remains to be seen how fast the 8.01" display will consume battery power, but it does mean that it will be one of the best performing Android phones available.
Xiaomi hasn't skimped on the camera on the Mi Mix Fold either, with a 108MP sensor, plus a 13MP ultrawide and an 8MP liquid lens. The latter is interesting: it can function as a 3x telephoto lens (30x digitally) or a macro lens. Xiaomi teased this before launch, but we'll have to see how it works in practice. For selfies, there is a hole for a 20MP shooter in smartphone mode, but no hole in tablet mode.
In hopes of creating the best possible photographic experience, Xiaomi has included a new Surge C1 image processing chip in the Mi Mix Fold. In theory, it brings faster autofocus, better auto white balance and auto exposure, in addition to better low-light performance.
There is also a PC mode, but we do not know if it will support external displays like Samsung's DeX mode or Motorola's new Ready For mode. As for software, the Mi Mix Fold curiously runs Android 10 under MIUI 11; it is odd to use an Android version that is a year and a half old, especially since Android 11 has been released long enough already and foldable It also includes explicit support for devices.
The Mi Mix Fold is limited to China, and Xiaomi does not intend to change that. 12GB/256GB model will be available for 9,999 yuan (~$1,521) and 12GB/512GB for 10,999 yuan (~$1,674). 16GB RAM and 512 GB of storage and a special edition with a ceramic back will be priced at NT$12,999 (~$1,978).
It's a shame that we won't see the Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold outside of China, as this foldable looks pretty good.
