The Nintendo Switch Pro may have gained credibility thanks to a new report regarding the chips used in Nintendo's current game console.
According to sources within Nvidia (who spoke to Gamereactor), the company will stop production of the Tegra X1 chipset used in the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Lite this year. Unfortunately, the source does not say exactly what will come next, but this information is already enough to get our hearts racing.
Nintendo has said nothing about stopping production of the Switch altogether, and four years after its launch, it is still selling well. Therefore, it is very likely that some new chip will be needed to continue production of the Switch. And the need for a new chip is also a great opportunity for a performance upgrade, such as the rumored one for the Switch Pro.
Rumors surrounding the Switch's performance upgrades also suggest that it will be capable of 1080p graphics rendering in handheld mode, and 4K output when docked. the Switch console is not likely to offer true 4K gaming, but some leaks and hints are, suggest a form of co-processor in the new Switch dock to help up-mix graphics to 4K output.
However, Nvidia may only refresh the current Tegra X1 "Mariko" with slight tweaks that would not lead to a significant performance boost for Switch consoles that discontinue the current Tegra X1 and use a "Mariko" replacement.
However, Switch Pro rumors are not solely focused on processing. There have also been recent reports that Nintendo will use a larger, more power-efficient 7-inch 720p OLED display panel from Samsung. This is the same resolution as the display on the current Switch, but according to this report, the Switch Pro will gain the ability to output 4K video when connected to another display.
Further reports on these displays reveal that Nintendo is ordering between 500,000 and 1 million units per month. Indeed, this appears to be a corporate action in anticipation of a spike in demand around the time of the launch.
Nintendo itself has stated that it has no future plans for a new console. However, it is possible that a Switch Pro will appear at some point in the future, if not later next year.
A Nintendo insider on the Resertera forums, calling himself NateDrake, has claimed that the Switch Pro will be released in the next year of the Nintendo Switch, or 2022, as unconfirmed but reasonably credible information.
"It was supposed to launch this year, but it will probably be delayed to 2022. This alleged insider said, "Delay can and will continue to be an ever-changing variable in figuring out when we will hear about it and when we will see it."
A Bloomberg report claims that the earliest the Switch Pro could be released is this September.
As for pricing, one analyst believes the Switch Pro will sell for $399. This is a lower price than the PS5 and Xbox Series X. However, they have very different priorities when it comes to graphics, audio, and storage speeds.
Time will tell if the Switch Pro is indeed real and when we can expect it. However, these leaks further suggest that a Switch Pro is on the way.
