The OnePlus 9 device is expected to arrive next month, but this will leave few surprises. The latest leak comes from TechDroider, which has posted four screenshots that reveal the OnePlus 9's internal specs.
The tweets contain more information than most people probably need or want, including details such as current battery temperatures.
Given that the OnePlus 8 and 8T had 48MP and 16MP specs on the same camera, these camera specs may seem a bit on the low side at first glance, but our guess is that these are actually the photo resolution after quad-pixel binning. In other words, we imagine the cameras will offer the same number of megapixels as the previous generation: 12 x 4 for 48MP and 4 x 4 for 16MP.
However, this means that there is little difference in specs between the OnePlus 9 and last year's OnePlus 8, and even less with the OnePlus 8T, which shares the same 120Hz screen and battery capacity All three models have the same screen size, resolution and RAM, on-board storage.
The big difference, of course, is in the main SoC. Last year's OnePlus 8 all used Qualcomm's Snapdragon 865 processor, but this year's models will use the Snapdragon 888 chipset.
Given that this is the same processor jump Samsung made between the Galaxy S20 and S21, we have a pretty good idea how it will translate in terms of performance. In our benchmarks, the 888 chip improved multi-core performance by just under 5%, but in practical terms, it was able to hit the highest fps in 3D games.
Still, with such a modest performance boost and little change in core specs, we don't think the OnePlus 9, coming next month, will be a must-upgrade. However, this could bode well for the Chinese company. By upgrading a basic device in relative safety, buyers may turn to the more expensive OnePlus 9 Pro with 12GB RAM and a rumored Hasselblad camera.
