God of War Ragnarok - Everything We Know So Far

God of War Ragnarok - Everything We Know So Far

God of War Ragnarok will follow 2018's God of War, one of the best PS4 games ever, this year, but no details beyond a trailer with game footage have yet been revealed.

Taking full advantage of the power of the PS5, the game footage for "God of War Ragnarok" already looks fantastic. This time around, it looks like Kratos and Atreus will be exploring nine more realms of Norse mythology. While we wait, we encourage you to return to "God of War" and play it on the PS5; the enhancements it offers will make this masterful adventure even better.

Again, not a lot of information about the game, but with that in mind, here's what we know about "God of War Ragnarok" so far.

After Cory Barlog, director of the previous "God of War" game, kicked off rumors that "God of War Ragnarok" would be released on June 30, he tweeted (open in new tab): "If it were up to me, all info as soon as I know it I will share. But it is not up to me.

"So please be patient. I promise to share as soon as possible. We are making the game for you. It is thanks to all of you that we are able to make the game," he added.

Thus, it appears that "God of War Ragnarok" is aiming for a 2022 release, but a release date has yet to be confirmed. According to one rumor, "God of War Ragnarok" will be released in November 2022.

God of War Ragnarök was originally scheduled for a 2021 release but was pushed back to 2022. As is the case with some blockbuster titles, we would not be surprised if the game's release date was shifted again at the last minute.

After much anticipation, the official trailer for God of War Ragnarok, which was unveiled at the PlayStation Showcase 2021, has finally been released. The trailer shows the interaction between an aging Atreus and his father Kratos. Also returning are familiar characters from 2018's God of War, as well as the Norse gods Thor and Tyr.

What we can take from this announcement, however, is that the upcoming God of War is a direct sequel to the 2018 game. Spoiler alert: The ending of that game sows the seeds of the ancient Norse tale of Ragnarok. During the ending, Thor, the Norse god of thunder, appears in Kratos' home, seemingly seeking revenge for Kratos' murder of his sons and his brother Balder.

Given this, we can expect Kratos and his son Atreus (who happens to be the trickster god Loki) to travel through the Nine Realms in God of War Ragnarok. This would include Svartalfheim, Asgard, and other regions.

We can also expect combat to be a satisfying mix of chaos and weight, perhaps deepened by the advanced tactile feedback of the dual-sense controller.

"God of War Ragnarok" is a cross-platform game and will be available on both PS5 and PS4. Therefore, whether the game's graphical fidelity can be kept in check will depend on how well Santa Monica Studios can scale the game for both consoles. However, the game footage so far looks fantastic.

"God of War" looked fantastic on PS4, so one can expect the sequel to look pretty good as well.

Currently, it is very difficult to find restocks of the PS5 thanks to the worldwide chip shortage affecting the supply of game consoles and graphics cards. Releasing "God of War Ragnarok" across PlayStation generations could be a good thing for those who have yet to get a PS5.

If "God of War Ragnarok" is released this year and follows its predecessor in storytelling and action, it could be another addition to the best PS5 games.

It's a big challenge, but Santa Monica Studios has a lot of talent. As Sony's first-party developer, the company could draw a lot of power from the PS5 and make God of War Ragnarok a feast for the eyes. Even if it doesn't happen, we are eager to see what happens next in the story and to explore more of the Nine Realms. That said, I'd be careful about going back to "God of War" on PS5 - I'm afraid I won't be able to stand the wait for Ragnarok.
