The first full trailer for the "Mario Bros." movie, released today, Tuesday, November 29, shows the entire gang driving vehicles on Rainbow Road, including Mario in a go-kart, Toad in a Big Wheel car, and Peach on a motorcycle. I'm not sure how the iconic Mario Kart level will tie into the film, but it's just what we needed to get us more excited.
Story-wise, the "Thor: Ragnarok" vibe comes from the scene where Mario (voiced by Chris Pratt) and Donkey Kong (Seth Rogen) face off in a "Super Smash Bros."-style gladiatorial battle and Toad (Keegan-Michael Key) cheers them on. The scene in which Toad (Keegan-Michael Key) cheers him on gives a sense of "Thor: Ragnarok. Then we see Bowser (Jack Black) putting his hands on Luigi (Charlie Day). Glowing.
Mario has an old-fashioned SMB-like scene (the drop platform! Flying fish!) ), and Peach can be seen casually bouncing around! - Peach casually holds a fireball in one hand and says to Mario, "We're all counting on you."
So it's past time to talk about Chris Pratt's over-the-top Mario voice, and we're at the point where we wonder how many Mario game references we can cram into one movie.
That said, the voice casting is becoming great for the rest of the cast. Jack Black's Bowser seems perfectly devilish, Charlie Day's manic Luigi looks like fun, and, as mentioned above, Anya Taylor-Joy's Peach seems like the perfect foil for Chris Pratt's character.
Best of all? We're super happy to see Mario actually do some plumbing. (Mario Kart 8 has a level set in New York City, so it's obvious he's moving from New York to New Donk City.) But it's good to see Mario questioning himself. Will he stay in the Mushroom Kingdom or warp back to reality?
