Samsung Galaxy S23 is the world's first mobile phone with Gorilla Glass Victus2

Samsung's Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23 Ultra may use the latest tempered glass.

Corning (opens in new tab), which makes Gorilla Glass used in billions of smartphones, has announced that its new Gorilla Glass Victus 2 will be used in Samsung's "next generation Galaxy flagship smartphones." The announcement does not name the Galaxy S23, but it certainly seems to point to it. Previous rumors also support this idea.

The Galaxy S22 series used Gorilla Glass Victus Plus, which was already tough. However, according to Corning, the Victus 2 glass has improved both scratch resistance and drop performance. Especially on concrete, which Corning claims is the most common building material and thus the surface most likely to drop a cell phone.

The best Android phones to be released this year (and beyond) will likely feature Gorilla Glass Victus 2. However, Samsung will be the first to adopt it, which may provide an incentive for accident-prone cell phone users to make the Galaxy S23 their next phone.

The tougher Gorilla Glass Victus 2 may be the most noticeable design upgrade for the Galaxy S23 series; the S23 Ultra does not appear to have any major changes in appearance, but the Galaxy S23 and S23 Plus apparently have the same separate rear camera design It appears that the three models will adopt the same separated rear camera design, giving the three models a more unified look.

Inside Samsung's new models will be a newly customized Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, which should provide strong performance. New camera sensors are also expected, including a 12MP selfie snapper on all three models and a 200MP main camera on the Ultra model.

Whether the Galaxy S23 Corning is talking about is really a Samsung phone, and whether the other rumors are accurate, will likely be known at Galaxy Unpacked on February 1. However, there is still time for more Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23 Ultra rumors to emerge, so we will continue to look for more hints about these upcoming devices in the meantime.
