Samsung's Galaxy S23 series is just days away from its actual unveiling. One of the biggest upgrades Samsung is expected to make this year is to give the Galaxy S23 Ultra models a significant jump in megapixels; from the 108MP camera sensor seen on the Galaxy S22 Ultra, the S23 Ultra will have a 200MP camera is almost certain.

Now a teaser video from Samsung (opens in new tab) shows off the 200MP camera smarts we'll see in the new Ultra model.

As for what to expect from the S23 series, there is not much room for imagination. The phone has a host of leaked and detailed specs, and even an early retail unit was recently revealed, with a hands-on video (opens in new tab) showing the apparent S23 Ultra and one demonstrating the phone's 100x zoom.

Samsung recently announced a new camera sensor, the ISOCELL HP2, which can produce 200MP, 50MP, and 12.5MP images through pixel binning (combining pixel data into larger virtual pixels) The S23 Ultra will feature this camera sensor may be.

The company has announced two other 200MP sensors (ISOCELL HP1 and HP3). However, it is the new HP2 that Samsung has confirmed is currently in mass production for the "premium smartphones of tomorrow." It appears to be the Galaxy S23 Ultra, and earlier rumors also said that it is the HP2 sensor that is most likely to be in the next premium flagship.

Following the press release about the new sensor's capabilities, Samsung recently released a teaser video showing the camera in action.

This is perhaps the first official video regarding the 200MP camera that will be featured in Samsung's top-of-the-line model. The video shows the level of detail in the 200MP shot and highlights some of the features of the HP2 camera sensor.

The ISOCELL HP2 is a 1/1.3" sensor, slightly larger than the S22 Ultra's 108MP one. It also has a fast autofocus system called Super QPD, which is suitable for low-light photography. It appears that all 200 million pixels are used in the focusing process. The sensor will also allow for more detail in the shadows of images and video.

The video also shows that the shutter time lag when taking 200 MP photos will be reduced, which should allow for quicker high megapixel photos.

As for video recording, the camera sensor would be able to record 8K video at 30 fps with a wide field of view (with minimal cropping using 50MP mode) or HDR 4K video at up to 60 fps. This is also something we have heard about before in leaked information, which may mean that this is indeed the sensor that will be on the S23 Ultra. Samsung also states that this sensor will allow for smoother action shots.

These are not camera test shots, of course, so we'll have to see how the S23 Ultra's camera performs when we actually get our hands on the phone to see if it really is one of the best camera phones out there.

Samsung's teaser video ends by saying "More Pixels. Epic details," but it's not just the number of megapixels in the S23 Ultra's camera that makes the camera work.

Aside from the 200 megapixel lens, the S23 Ultra is expected to have a 12 megapixel ultra-wide camera and a 10 megapixel telephoto lens (one with 3x optical zoom and the other with 10x zoom capability). There may also be a selfie camera upgrade, albeit with fewer megapixels.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra may also feature a custom Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, a 5,000 mAh battery, and up to 1TB of storage.
