Nintendo Switch2 could arrive this year according to a new leak

A new leak regarding the successor to the Nintendo DS has surfaced in the wake of Nintendo's Pokémon Day event.

The leak, posted on 4Chan and supposedly verified by Pokémon insider Centro Leaks (opens in new tab), is written in non-native English and claims to be from "a programmer at a Pokémon outsourcing company." In the post, the leaker claims that the upcoming Pokémon Scarlet and the second Pokémon Smile DLC will be released along with a new Switch model, along with a "graphics enhancement patch" for the game. With the second installment of "Treasures of Area Zero" officially launching in winter 2023, a new Nintendo Switch may be available this year.

Of course, it is worth noting that 4Chan is one of the more spurious places on the Internet, and any rumor should be taken with more than a grain of salt, but some elements of this leak do make sense. In fact, this leak was posted before the Pokémon DLC was announced at the "Pokémon Presents" event, but the news was anticipated and largely confirmed before the event, especially since Pokémon Sword and Shield followed the same pattern. The specifics of the leak regarding this DLC caught the attention of several people.

The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero will feature new Pokémon designs, including Ogapon, which matches the description of a "mysterious Pokémon with a green mask," and Terrapagos, which matches the prediction that "the third legendary Pokémon is a big blue turtle."

While it makes sense to launch a console alongside a big title like Pokémon, many expect "Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom" to be Nintendo's biggest launch of the year. As a completely new title, rather than a mere expansion, the launch of a new console is more likely to be justified.

Based on this rumored "graphics enhancement patch," it is reasonable to assume that the Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch Pro will pack even more power under the hood. Nintendo has never been one to prioritize the power of its consoles, but it is clear that the Switch is far behind the PS5 and Xbox Series X in that regard.

Some rumors suggest that the next Switch model will support 4K output to a connected display, while the success of the Steam Deck will undoubtedly give Nintendo something to think about to make its handheld console stand out. A recent report by the UK competition and marketing authority suggests that the new Switch may have greater cloud gaming potential.
