According to analyst Jeff Pu (via MacRumors), both iPhone 16 models could come with an "enhanced" version of the A17 Bionic chipset and 8GB of RAM. LPDDR4 memory, but rather LPDDR5 memory as already seen in the iPhone 14 Pro series.

The A17 Bionic chip in the iPhone 16 is not a big surprise. Apple has been saving its latest and greatest chipsets for the Pro models since the release of the iPhone 14 last year, and the iPhone 15 series is set to continue that example. However, according to Pu, the A17 in the iPhone 16 may be different from the one in the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Pu claims that next year's A17 and A18 chipsets will be manufactured using TMSC's N3E process (an enhanced 3nm manufacturing process). This process appears to be simpler and more accessible than the N3B node used for this year's A17 chips, with fewer EUV layers and lower transistor density.

MacRumors notes that this could cause a reduction in efficiency, but could also lead to better overall performance. The site also noted that the rumor originally appeared on the Chinese social network Weibo in June. The change was thought to be a cost-cutting measure that would only affect next year's A17 chip, but now it appears that the A18 Bionic may also be manufactured using the same process.

What is not currently known is how different the 2024 A17 Bionic chip will be compared to the 2023 one; the A15 Bionic added a GPU core when moving from the iPhone 13 to the iPhone 14, but was still essentially the same chip. It was. An entirely new process for the next generation A17 could have far greater consequences.
