While we await an official announcement regarding the Nintendo Switch 2, new leaked information suggests that it will be a very powerful device. In fact, recent reports suggest that the Switch 2 will outperform the Xbox Series S in at least one key area.
According to Felipe Lima of Universo Nintendo (discovered by Gamerant), the Switch 2 will have 12 GB of RAM. This spec update comes after the device was reportedly revealed to some developers at the Gamescom trade show in Cologne, Germany. This information apparently came from an anonymous source who attended the closed-door presentation. Nevertheless, it should be taken with a grain of salt.
The current Nintendo Switch has 4G of LPDDR4 RAM. For comparison, the PS5 and Xbox Series X each have 16GB of GDDR6 RAM. The Xbox Series S, on the other hand, uses 10GB of the same 6th generation RAM. If this leak is accurate, the Switch 2 will have more RAM than the Xbox Series S. It should be noted that the source did not mention what type of RAM the Switch 2 will have.
If the Switch 2 has 10 GB of GDDR5 RAM (the same type found in the PS4 and Xbox One), then the Xbox Series S would have a generational advantage over Nintendo's new hardware. Certainly the Switch 2 would win in terms of numbers, but the entry-level Xbox has faster memory, and there are significant differences with respect to overall performance levels.
It is possible that the Switch 2 will have GDDR6 RAM, but as Gamerant points out, in that case Nintendo would essentially have to skip a generation of RAM, which it has never done before.
This information about the console's RAM capacity is just the latest Switch 2 rumor to surface on the Internet. In fact, Switch 2 rumors have been all the rage this summer, with various sources claiming that the console will launch in 2024 at an attractive price point of $399, just $50 more than the Nintendo Switch OLED.
More dubious sources suggest that it will actually be called the Nintendo Focus and will include VR capabilities, and it has also been suggested that it will have new camera capabilities.
Specific details are essentially nonexistent, and it is not even certain that it will be called Nintendo Switch 2, but it is almost certain that Nintendo is currently developing a successor to the highly successful original Switch.
Hopefully, it won't be long until solid facts are presented and we can leave this era of speculation, rumors, and leaks behind. After all, Nintendo unveiled its first-generation Switch to the world in October 2016, and whatever hardware the gaming giant is currently preparing could follow the same rollout plan.
