Released in 2021, initially as a PS5/PC exclusive and then a year later for Xbox consoles, "Deathloop" is the work of European studio Arkane.

In "Deathloop," the player plays Colt, a wisecracking assassin stuck in a time loop on the mysterious Black Reef Island. To break the loop, Colt must track down and eliminate eight high-profile targets known as Visionaries during one murder-filled day. But this mission, which is quite difficult even by itself, is further complicated by the fact that he is being pursued by a rival assassin named Juliana, who is trying to protect the loop at all costs. To succeed, he must carefully plan the perfect murder sequence to finish off the Visionaries in one fell swoop.

The style of this FPS oozes with the Cold War aesthetics of the 1960s. Everything from the soundtrack to the menus is thoughtfully crafted to match the overall atmosphere, and there is no denying that Deathloop is one of the best looking and sounding games in years. In addition, the sharp writing is genuinely funny, and the sarcastic banter between Colt and Juliana is easy to latch on to.

Fortunately, it is also an absolute joy to play. While one can take a "shoot first, ask questions later" approach without much thought, strategic players will be more successful in their efforts to solve the core "murder puzzle" and break the chain of events. The roguelike aspect of the game keeps the stakes high, but the ability to carry certain weapons and perks with you to each loop means that you can play dozens of times without getting frustrated.

Powerful firearms such as sniper rifles and shotguns are available, as well as magical powers known as slabs. These range from the ability to teleport short distances (especially useful when attempting a stealth run) to being able to link up enemies, allowing them to eliminate multiple targets in a single action.

Players can control Julianna to hunt down defenseless colts who are trying to plan the perfect serial murder plot. However, if this multiplayer aspect should not get in the way of a well-thought-out plan, it can be disabled and instead allow Julianna to be controlled only by the computer.

The undeniably exciting mix of stylish visual design, a highly engaging central premise, and clever shooting gameplay led us to select "Deathloop" as our GOTY for 2021. We've recommended this game on sale many times over the past few years, and now that you can play it without spending a dime on Prime Gaming, there's no reason not to go to Blackreef and cause a little chaos.
