Roku is expanding its What to Watch feature to devices and TVs around the world, making it easier for users to find content they might otherwise miss.

Entertainment company Roku is rolling out new updates to its streaming player and Roku-enabled TVs with a new What to Watch feature, the company confirmed in an interview with our sister site TechRadar. The feature, which rolled out to U.S.-based customers in October, analyzes users' viewing behavior and recommends similar programs based on their preferences.

What to Watch runs in the background to understand what streaming viewers are interested in across genres and streaming services. Based on that understanding, it recommends TV shows, documentaries, and movies that are likely to resonate with the user. For example, if a person is a frequent viewer of crime dramas, What to Watch will suggest other crime drama programs that the person has not seen before.

Most importantly, What to Watch identifies which streaming services the user subscribes to and recommends only programs on those platforms. All other content from streaming services to which the user is not subscribed is excluded from the recommendation list. This is no mean feat; in many other cases, including Amazon Fire TV and Chromecast, content is not filtered based on the user's subscription.

This feature on Roku is the company's effort to streamline the viewing process in a world where finding content among the endless streaming platforms is nearly impossible. what to Watch aims to understand user interests and provide content This means that they do not have to waste time sifting through programs that they are not necessarily interested in.

The What to Watch update is available worldwide, not just in the U.S., and includes a Continue Watching tab for easily resuming shows and movies, and a Save List for easy access to programs you want to watch later.

The Roku update will not happen overnight. The company told TechRadar that new features will be rolled out to its lineup of streaming players over the next few weeks, and Roku-compatible TVs such as JVC and TCL should see updates in the coming months.
